This Rare 15.81ct Purple-Pink Large Diamond Could Break Auction Record

Its name is Sakura – A Japanese word that means ‘cherry blossom’. The diamond is named so because of its bright purple-pink colour tone. And what’s more interesting is that –

The Sakura will be the largest purple-pink diamond to ever go on sale at auction. And this rare 15.81ct purple-pink large diamond could break auction records.

Christie’s auction house will organise a sale next week in Hong Kong, and this most enormous, rare purple-pink diamond will take all the limelight. The gemstone sits on a classic platinum ring and has been graded as an “internally flawless” diamond. This signifies that you cannot spot any blemishes through naked eyes but only under closer magnification.

Moreover, what makes this Sakura diamond more unique is that it has the colour grade “fancy vivid”. And according to Christie’s, just 4% of pink diamonds in the world has achieved this grade of intense colour.

Overall, the Sakura is a rare purple-pink diamond, classified as “internally flawless” and “fancy vivid”, and its enormous 15.81ct weight is cherry on the top. So what’s its estimate?

The Christie’s auction house expects this rare purplish-pink diamond to break all records, fetching nearly £26.95 million at the Hong Kong sale. However, it won’t be surprising considering the uniqueness of this diamond.

The Super-startling Purple-Pink Diamond at Christie’s

Vickie Sek is the Chairman of the jewellery department at Christie’s. She demonstrated the Sakura diamond during a telephonic interview, saying that it is precisely a Sakura flower shade. It is hugely rarer to find such a hue in pink diamonds and that also, with an “internally flawless” grade. What she says is that pink diamonds typically have much graining.

Moreover, one of the most striking things that make this purple-pink diamond an unusual find is that it comes in such a massive size, totalling 15.81ct. Less than 10% of pink diamonds weigh over one-fifth of a carat. And Sakura is almost eighty times this size.

Thus, the Sakura is expected to become the costliest purple-pink diamond ever to sell at auction at a record-breaking price. Currently, a 14.8ct diamond named “The Spirit of the Rose” holds the highest record of selling for nearly £19.14 million last year at Sotheby’s.

Pink diamonds are available in several shades. However, the purple undertones like seen in the Sakura are rarer and, thus, noteworthy. Nonetheless, no Blue-book states that purple-pink or pink diamonds are scarce. Sek said that pink diamonds had been evidently known to fetch staggering sums at auctions.

Well, let’s see whether or not the purple-pink Sakura “internally flawless” diamond reach the expected sum at Christie’s next week auction. You never know the stone may surpass the estimated sum with its flawless classification, rarity and beauty.
